A founding member of Bobby McFerrin’s groundbreaking a cappella group Voicestra, David Worm is a master of vocal improvisation, circle singing, and sonic storytelling. An Oakland native, David has spent decades redefining the power of the human voice through his work with Voicestra, Gimme 5, MOTION, WeBe3, and the globally acclaimed vocal ensemble SoVoSó.
David’s distinctive vocal percussion, dynamic range, and intuitive approach to vocal music have made him a sought-after collaborator for international artists, dancers, and composers—including Alvin Ailey Dance, Robert Moses Kin, and Bandaloop. His compositions have earned Isadora Duncan Awards and appeared in films, documentaries, and major dance productions, including work performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov.
With over 80 album credits, David continues to inspire through his workshops in vocal improvisation, circle singing facilitation, and rhythm at institutions like Esalen, Omega, Berklee College of Music, and beyond. At our event, he brings decades of creative mastery—and a deep joy of shared musical exploration—to every circle he leads.

While waiting to go into a woman’s festival, Ami was nearly murdered by five young men in a big white truck. They smashed into her, dragging her 86 feet. Lodged between the tire and exhaust pipe, she could smell her flesh cooking. When the truck stopped all Ami could think to do was start singing. It took years of surgeries, physical therapy, and hospital stays to heal her third degree burns. No drugs could help the pain, so she turned to music, the only thing that reminded her of peace.
The doctors may have healed her on the outside, but she healed herself on the inside. She learned every person has to be a part of their own healing, so she’s still singing, and sharing her story, because she vowed from that lonely abyss that she would help others get out of the pit of pain and be saved by music.
Takako Fujioka brings a unique and inspiring voice to the CircleSong experience, bridging the worlds of neuroscience and music with warmth, clarity, and deep insight. A researcher at Stanford University’s CCRMA (Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics) and the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute, Takako explores how our brains process rhythm, harmony, improvisation, and connection through sound. Her pioneering work in performance monitoring and joint musical actions reveals the invisible architecture of musical collaboration—how we listen, adapt, and create together in real time.
At CircleSong, Takako will guide us into the science of sound and music-making, showing how empathy, attention, and creativity light up the brain during vocal improvisation and group singing. Through playful experiments and illuminating insights, she’ll help us understand not only how music moves us, but why singing together transforms us.
